Ryan Garcia announced on social media Wednesday that he and Floyd Mayweather have verbally agreed to a fight at 147 pounds for the WBC welterweight title. Garcia, who currently holds the WBC welterweight championship, shared the news in a series of posts, writing, "Trust me at first I thought this was bull***. But it’s real Floyd and I agree to a fight. 147 for the WBC welterweight championship of the world. 50-0 vs The current champ."
Garcia added on Instagram that the agreement followed a phone conversation with Mayweather. "Just got off the phone with @floydmayweather. Talking about fighting – it’s real and he wants to do a real fight 147. He and I both agreed to post this! Let’s Rumble," he wrote. He clarified that the bout would be for the WBC world championship belt, stating, "I made that very clear and Floyd and I agreed to fight."
At the time of this writing, no formal negotiations have taken place, according to sources close to the situation who spoke to Uncrowned’s Darshan Desai. The idea of a Garcia-Mayweather showdown has circulated for weeks, sparked by an alleged challenge from Mayweather, who has yet to comment publicly.
Mayweather, 49, retired from professional boxing after his 2017 crossover bout against Conor McGregor, a fight that remains one of the highest-selling pay-per-views ever. Since then, he has competed in eight exhibition matches and was briefly scheduled to come out of retirement for a rematch against Manny Pacquiao in late 2026. That fight ultimately fell apart.
Garcia, 28, has emerged as one of the biggest names in U.S. boxing. He claimed the WBC welterweight title in February with a win over Mario Barrios and successfully defended it in September with a second-round knockout of Conor Benn.
Mayweather's professional record stands at 50-0 with 27 knockouts, while Garcia's is 26-2 with 21 knockouts. The prospect of the undefeated legend facing the current WBC champion at welterweight has generated significant buzz, though any official deal remains unconfirmed.
For now, the announcement marks the latest chapter in what has become a persistent story, with Garcia driving the narrative forward through social media and public statements. Whether the fight will come to fruition depends on upcoming negotiations and the willingness of both camps to finalize terms.
