PSG winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia to undergo ACL surgery after Champions League injury against Barcelona

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia will have surgery on his right knee after rupturing the anterior cruciate ligament during Paris Saint-Germain’s 4-2 Champions League victory over Barcelona on Tuesday. The injury occurred in the 59th minute following a challenge with Barcelona’s Xavi Espart, forcing the Georgian winger off the pitch at Parc des Princes.

PSG confirmed the operation but have not provided a timetable for Kvaratskhelia’s return. The 25-year-old was making his first start of the season in the Champions League and had appeared 11 times across all competitions this term.

Kvaratskhelia joined PSG from Napoli in January 2025 and has since contributed to the club’s back-to-back Champions League titles. His absence comes as a blow to PSG’s attacking options midway through their title defence.

The match saw PSG and Barcelona level at 2-2 until the final 10 minutes, when the hosts scored twice to secure a win and maintain their perfect record with three wins from three group games.

Alongside Kvaratskhelia’s injury, PSG confirmed that Ousmane Dembele and Marquinhos will also be sidelined for several weeks. Dembele left the game with a left thigh injury, while Marquinhos suffered a right thigh problem during the same fixture.

The club’s official statement did not specify the severity or expected recovery periods for Dembele and Marquinhos but indicated both will miss upcoming matches.

PSG’s manager must now adjust his squad as the Champions League group stage progresses, coping without three key players. The win against Barcelona keeps PSG at the top of their group, but the injury list presents a challenge for their campaign.
