Nationals set steep price for 26-year-old shortstop CJ Abrams amid trade talks

The Washington Nationals are demanding a steep price for shortstop CJ Abrams amid ongoing trade discussions this offseason. Abrams, who hit 33 home runs, drove in 106 runs, and stole 34 bases in 40 attempts during the 2026 season, remains a hot commodity, but the Nationals have held firm on their valuation.

Abrams, a two-time All-Star and 26 years old, has drawn repeated trade interest from multiple teams, according to Robert Murray of FanSided. Despite the inquiries, the Nationals’ front office, led by Paul Toboni, has not been persuaded to move the star player. “Teams are expected to keep calling about Abrams, but Paul Toboni and the front office have set a very high asking price on their star infielder,” Murray wrote.

2026 was Abrams’ best offensive season yet, with a 127 OPS+ complementing his power and speed. His ability to contribute across the board has made him highly sought after, especially as he can potentially shift to second base or the outfield, increasing his versatility.

Washington has been in rebuild mode for several years, acquiring prospects including James Wood alongside Abrams. The Nationals could use Abrams as leverage to accelerate that rebuild or to add more prospects if they feel they are not ready to contend in 2027.

“There is skepticism that he’ll be traded, but it’s easy to see a scenario where another team meets Toboni’s asking price,” Murray added. If the Nationals decide to move him, Abrams could fetch multiple prospects in return, particularly from teams looking for a left-handed bat with speed and power.

The Nationals have not publicly confirmed any specific trade talks or offers, but the high asking price suggests they are unwilling to part with Abrams without significant return. The situation remains fluid as teams continue to gauge the market this winter.

Meanwhile, the broader MLB offseason is shaping up with other notable trade candidates and roster moves. The Yankees are reportedly considering a $12 million, two-time Silver Slugger winner and four-time All-Star as a replacement for Jazz Chisholm. The Astros have two clear trade candidates, while the Padres’ postseason hero with a 3.21 ERA is predicted to secure a $120 million contract. The Mariners’ manager candidate recently withdrew from consideration for a Phillies job, and the Cubs’ 26-home run outfielder is linked to a $66 million contract prediction.

For now, CJ Abrams remains at the center of the Nationals’ plans, with any potential trade depending on whether a team meets their high valuation during this offseason.
