Cole Knuble makes NHL debut with Philadelphia Flyers, fulfilling a family legacy

Cole Knuble stepped onto the ice at Philadelphia’s Xfinity Mobile Arena on October 19, making his NHL debut for the Flyers in a 3-2 victory over the Colorado Avalanche. The 22-year-old forward, called up from the Lehigh Valley Phantoms of the American Hockey League, played in front of his parents as he fulfilled a family connection to the franchise.

Knuble’s father, Mike, spent several seasons with Philadelphia, appearing in 362 games including playoffs between 2005 and 2009, then returning briefly in 2013. The younger Knuble has vivid memories of the arena from his father’s time with the Flyers, and growing up a fan of the team added to the significance of the moment. “Obviously I have been a fan of this team my whole life, so I think it’s extra special,” Cole said.

The Flyers brought Knuble up alongside two other forwards to cover for injured players Owen Tippett, Tyson Foerster, and Travis Konecny. A fourth-round pick in the 2023 NHL Draft, Knuble came close to making the Flyers' roster out of training camp but was ultimately assigned to Lehigh Valley. Rather than dwell on the disappointment, he embraced the opportunity to develop in the minors.

“I came (to camp) trying to make the team,” Knuble explained. “But I think once I got down to Lehigh, the staff was so great. The players were all very welcoming, and I got to play in every situation. If you’re doing that, you can’t really complain too much, and I get an opportunity every game to kind of showcase myself and it’s a lot of fun.”

Philadelphia’s victory over Colorado was a tight contest, with the Flyers edging out the Avalanche 3-2. Knuble’s debut added a new chapter to the Flyers’ history, linking past and present through the Knuble family. His call-up highlights the pathway from the AHL to the NHL as injuries test team depth early in the season.

The Flyers have yet to confirm how much ice time Knuble will receive moving forward, but the club’s willingness to turn to their young prospect suggests trust in his readiness. For now, Cole Knuble’s first game in the NHL stands as a notable milestone alongside his father’s lengthy career with Philadelphia.
