San Francisco 49ers hold off Washington Commanders 23-17 to stay perfect at 6-0

San Francisco survived a late Washington rally to extend their unbeaten run to 6-0 with a 23-17 victory on Monday night. The 49ers held the Commanders’ final drive when Jayden Daniels was sacked, securing the win after a tense finish.

San Francisco led comfortably at 23-3 before Washington mounted a comeback, scoring 14 unanswered points. The Commanders’ momentum was stalled by a facemask penalty on lineman Chris Paul, which wiped out a 31-yard touchdown run by Jeremy McNichols. That call proved costly as Washington fought to close the gap.

The 49ers lost star wide receiver Mike Evans near halftime to an Achilles injury. Evans had 94 yards on three catches before leaving the game, a blow to San Francisco’s passing attack. His absence made the late stages even more tense as the Commanders threatened to complete the comeback.

Washington showed more fight than in their previous outing against the Giants but struggled with time management. In the first half, the Commanders reached San Francisco’s 13-yard line on a fourth-and-2 play but failed to convert. Confusion followed when coach Quinn appeared unaware it was fourth down, seemingly ready to send out the field-goal unit.

Later in the fourth quarter, a stopped clock forced Daniels to call a timeout, leaving Washington with only two remaining in the final minutes. Those lost opportunities added pressure to the Commanders’ last stand.

The 49ers’ defence held firm when it mattered most, with the sack of Daniels ending Washington’s hopes of a late score. George Kittle celebrated the victory on ESPN, exclaiming “6-0, WHAAAT?!” as San Francisco maintained their perfect start.

Despite the Commanders’ spirited finish, San Francisco controlled the majority of the game. The 49ers built a strong lead early and withstood the pressure after Evans’ injury. Washington made their presence felt but couldn’t make the final push count.

The result keeps San Francisco atop the standings with an unblemished record. Washington will look to learn from their mistakes, particularly regarding clock management, as they aim to turn their performances around.
