Josh Allen tied Jim Kelly’s franchise record for touchdown passes as the Buffalo Bills edged the Las Vegas Raiders 33-30 on Sunday.
Allen threw for 255 yards and two touchdowns, including the 258th touchdown pass of his career in the third quarter. He escaped a near sack and found Keon Coleman for a 12-yard score that matched Hall of Famer Kelly’s mark. “Just doing what I got to do to help this team win a football game,” Allen said after the game.
The Bills improved to 5-1, holding off a Raiders team that had rallied to tie the game at 23-23 in the fourth quarter. James Cook’s 3-yard touchdown run with 4:43 left put Buffalo ahead for good. Tyler Bass then added a 38-yard field goal with under two minutes remaining, extending the lead to six points.
Cook carried the ball 95 yards without a fumble after struggling with ball security in the previous game against the Rams. He also caught three passes for 58 yards, including a 26-yard reception that set up his go-ahead touchdown. The Bills avoided turnovers for the first time in four games, snapping a run of nine turnovers over three weeks.
Las Vegas quarterback Kirk Cousins passed for 313 yards and two touchdowns to Tre Tucker, whose 44-yard catch with 1:32 left narrowed the deficit to three points. Tucker finished with five receptions for 97 yards. Tight ends Michael Mayer and Brock Bowers also made significant contributions, with Mayer hauling in seven catches for 95 yards and Bowers grabbing four for 70 yards.
The Raiders came back from a 23-13 deficit after Allen’s touchdown to Coleman, tying the game on Cousins’ 11-yard pass to Tucker with just over eight minutes remaining.
The game featured a notable incident when Bills safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson was ejected late in the first half for spitting at Raiders center Tyler Linderbaum. The ejection followed a defensive holding call against Buffalo that gave Las Vegas a first down and helped set up a 27-yard field goal by Matt Gay as the half expired to tie the score at 13-13.
Buffalo’s injury report included wide receiver DJ Moore and defensive lineman Ed Oliver, both sidelined for the second straight week. Outside linebacker Bradley Chubb left briefly with rib issues but returned, while tight end Dalton Kincaid, playing in his hometown on his 27th birthday, was injured in the third quarter but also returned to the field.
Allen’s streak of five consecutive games with a rushing touchdown ended, one shy of the Super Bowl-era record held by Chicago’s Justin Fields.
The Bills will have a bye next week before hosting Baltimore on November 1. The Raiders, now 3-3 with three straight losses, will host the Los Angeles Rams next Sunday.
