Steelers coach Mike McCarthy treated for ankle injury after being stepped on during game

Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy received treatment for an ankle injury after being stepped on during the first half of Sunday’s game in Tampa. While the Pittsburgh team retreated to the locker room at halftime, McCarthy stayed on the field and was seen entering the sideline medical tent for attention.

CBS broadcast coverage confirmed McCarthy was undergoing treatment, and the coach explained the situation during his postgame press conference. “I was hurt when I got stepped on during the first half,” he said.

The Steelers trailed 13-3 at halftime but rallied to take the game into overtime. Aaron Rodgers threw a touchdown pass to wide receiver Germie Bernard in extra time, securing the win. Despite the injury, McCarthy said the team managed the halftime adjustments well. “They didn’t miss a beat,” he remarked. “Adjustments were made, and halftime’s quick, anyway. Frankly, the biggest part was really just getting the offensive conversations to me when the guys came out. I thought the guys did what they needed to do.”

The game’s physicality extended beyond the players to the sidelines, where the NFL medical tents are typically reserved for injured players. McCarthy’s presence in the tent was an unusual sight, underlining the intensity of the game.

Looking ahead, the Steelers are scheduled to face the New Orleans Saints in France. McCarthy will be hoping to avoid any similar incidents as the team prepares for their international fixture.
