Northwestern holds Penn State to 1-1 draw despite early red card in Big Ten clash

Northwestern’s defense held firm for more than 80 minutes despite being reduced to 10 men early in their Big Ten clash with Penn State, securing a 1-1 draw that halted a two-game losing streak. Senior defender Fritz Volmar’s red card within the first 10 minutes left the Wildcats down a player, but they managed to keep the Nittany Lions from pulling away, even though Penn State outshot them 14 to 5.

The match remained scoreless at halftime, with Northwestern’s defense absorbing the pressure. The Wildcats turned the tide immediately after the break. Just 48 seconds into the second half, junior Gabriel Smyth scored his first goal for Northwestern, assisted by Bryant Mayer. That early strike gave the Wildcats a lead they defended vigorously despite their numerical disadvantage.

Penn State continued to press, nearly breaking through multiple times. Northwestern’s defense responded with notable interventions, including a crucial block by Andrew Johnson that quelled a dangerous Nittany Lions attack. However, in the 80th minute, Penn State found an equalizer. After an initial block, Joseph Sheridan tracked down the rebound and converted, leveling the score.

The final minutes saw both teams focus heavily on defense, preventing any late goals. Northwestern’s goalkeeper made several saves, helping the Wildcats withstand the barrage of shots that Penn State fired throughout the match. The draw improved Northwestern’s conference record to 2-3-1 and stopped their losing streak.

Northwestern will face No. 10 UCLA next Monday at 6:00 p.m. CT at Northwestern Medicine Field at Martin Stadium. The Bruins, currently 7-2-4 on the season, arrive in Evanston aiming to assert themselves as a major contender in the conference.
