Steve Young revealed a long-held affection for UCLA ahead of the Bruins’ 17-7 win over Wisconsin, a victory that kept their unbeaten run intact at 6-0. Speaking on ESPN’s College GameDay before the game, the former NFL quarterback described his “secret love” for UCLA, tracing it back to childhood memories of watching the Rose Bowl on the East Coast.
“I’m an emotional picker today,” Young said. “I don’t know. Maybe it’s just part of being up here with you guys but I grew up on the East Coast watching the Rose Bowl every year when the sunshine and the cheerleaders and all of it I was like UCLA and the colors I had secretly prayed I could be a Bruin all my life. I had a secret love for UCLA.”
The Bruins avoided becoming a casualty in a weekend full of upsets across college football by securing a solid win against Wisconsin. The victory left UCLA as the only unbeaten team remaining in the Big Ten and SEC conferences. Their record now stands at 6-0 overall and 4-0 in Big Ten play, marking their first 6-0 start since 2022.
Quarterback Ty Dieffenbach stepped into the spotlight after starter Nico Iamaleava was injured, making his first career start in the Football Bowl Subdivision. Dieffenbach completed 22 of 33 passes for 264 yards, helping UCLA maintain offensive momentum throughout the game.
Defensively, the Bruins limited Wisconsin to 214 total yards, including just 66 yards through the air. This defensive effort was integral in keeping the Badgers to only seven points.
Following this game, UCLA is set to host Michigan State, aiming to extend their unbeaten run. Young’s affection and the team’s performance have drawn attention as the Bruins continue their strong start to the season.
