Chaminda Vaas appointed Delhi Capitals’ fast bowling coach ahead of IPL 2027 season

Chaminda Vaas will begin his first coaching role in the Indian Premier League as Delhi Capitals’ fast bowling coach for the 2027 season. The former Sri Lankan left-arm pacer, who took 355 Test wickets and 400 ODI scalps during his playing career, joins a restructured Capitals coaching team led by Sourav Ganguly.

Vaas replaces Munaf Patel, who was Delhi’s bowling coach for the past two seasons. At 52, Vaas brings extensive international coaching experience, having worked with Sri Lanka’s men’s team in three separate stints and briefly with New Zealand. He served as Sri Lanka’s bowling coach from 2013 to 2015 before taking on the same role for Ireland during the 2016 T20 World Cup, then returning to Sri Lanka. His appointment adds fresh expertise to a Capitals side looking to refine its bowling attack.

The former Deccan Chargers player is no stranger to the IPL, having played for the franchise from 2008 to 2010 and picking up 18 wickets in 13 matches. His knowledge of Indian conditions and T20 cricket will be an asset as Delhi prepares for the new campaign.

Delhi Capitals have been active both on and off the field. Alongside the coaching changes, the franchise has reshuffled its squad through recent trades. Fast bowler T Natarajan returned to Sunrisers Hyderabad from Delhi, moving for a revised fee of Rs 5 crore after being acquired by Delhi for Rs 10.75 crore in 2025. In exchange, spinner Zeeshan Ansari joined Delhi at his existing Rs 40 lakh fee.

Another significant trade saw wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant return to Delhi Capitals from Lucknow Super Giants. Pant, who spent nine seasons with Delhi from 2016 to 2024, agreed to a reduced contract of Rs 15 crore compared to his Rs 27 crore auction price at Lucknow. Left-arm spinner Kuldeep Yadav moved the other way to Lucknow in that deal.

Delhi Capitals’ new coaching structure under Ganguly also includes former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh, appointed assistant and batting coach earlier this week. The changes suggest the franchise is aiming for a fresh approach ahead of the 2027 IPL season.

At this stage, Vaas is the latest official addition to the Capitals’ backroom staff. The team’s management has not revealed further details about their preparations or additional staff moves.
