The Los Angeles Chargers have lost all five of their games this NFL season, with quarterback Justin Herbert facing mounting criticism for his performances and offseason decisions. Herbert’s choice to miss about two weeks of voluntary workouts in May to accompany his fiancée, singer Madison Beer, on her music tour has come under particular scrutiny.
Herbert’s struggles were evident in the Chargers’ latest defeat, a 23-17 loss to the Denver Broncos at SoFi Stadium on Sunday. He completed 14 of 24 passes for 121 yards, throwing one touchdown and one interception, while being sacked five times. The team remains without a win after five games, increasing pressure on Herbert as the starting quarterback.
Head coach Jim Harbaugh acknowledged Herbert’s absence from the workouts but said the quarterback had informed him in advance and that he was fine with it. Herbert and Beer announced their engagement in July, but the timing of his commitment to the tour has led some to question his focus on football.
Former NFL star Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson initially expressed skepticism about Herbert’s priorities during a recent episode of Night Cap. Johnson said he wanted to see a photo of Madison Beer before passing judgment. “Let me see, let me see who this chick is. Let me see what she look like,” Johnson said on the show.
Johnson then outlined his concerns: “I’m trying to understand, like the decision-making on knowing you have a new offense, knowing you have a new coach, but you chose to skip that. You know, I know maybe sometimes – I know it’s voluntary, but still… You’re starting quarterback.”
When the photo of Madison Beer appeared, Johnson’s tone shifted. “Oh s***,” he said, followed by, “Yeah, hey, hey, hey, hey… I don’t too much put my cream in my coffee, but I get it.” Johnson’s comment suggested a change of heart after seeing Herbert’s fiancée.
Despite Herbert’s current challenges on the field, Johnson’s reaction indicates he now understands Herbert’s choice to prioritize time with Beer during the offseason. Herbert, meanwhile, continues to navigate a difficult start to the season, with the Chargers yet to secure a victory.
