Columbus Crew overturns early deficit with 33 shots to defeat Charlotte FC 3-1

Columbus Crew overturned an early deficit to beat Charlotte FC 3-1 on Wednesday night, firing a season-high 33 shots in the process. The Crew’s relentless attack eventually paid off after going behind in the 17th minute to a goal from Charlotte’s Idan Toklomati.

Toklomati, who has been in form with six goals and an assist in his past seven games, opened the scoring with a strike that put Charlotte ahead early. The 22-year-old defender’s goal gave Charlotte a 1-0 lead, but Columbus responded swiftly. Brais Méndez equalised in the 28th minute, capitalising on a giveaway from the visitors. His first-touch finish marked his second consecutive game with a goal and the third in his last four outings.

Columbus kept the pressure on, outshooting Charlotte by a wide margin as goalkeeper Kristijan Kahlina made 11 saves to keep his side in the game. Patrick Schulte, Columbus’s keeper, was called into action less often but managed two saves to help secure the win.

The turnaround came after the break. Anass Zaroury scored in the 63rd minute to give the Crew their first lead of the night. Just two minutes later, Taha Habroune volleyed the ball over Kahlina’s outstretched arm, off the crossbar and into the net, sealing the scoring at 3-1.

Charlotte, who now sit on a 13-9-7 record, will look to bounce back when they visit Philadelphia on Saturday. Columbus, with a 9-15-5 record, travel to Cincinnati for their next match on Sunday.

The match highlighted Columbus’s offensive persistence, with their 33 shots this season-high figure underscoring their determination to overturn the early deficit. Meanwhile, Charlotte’s defensive struggles in the second half cost them a valuable point despite their promising start.
