Kyle Fletcher aims for AEW tag title at WrestleDream after key injury comeback

Kyle Fletcher will challenge The Young Bucks for the AEW World Tag Team Championship at WrestleDream on October 17 in Orlando, Florida, marking his return from a significant injury earlier this year. The Protostar, as he is known in All Elite Wrestling, has been rebuilding his momentum since recovering without surgery and is now aiming for tag team gold alongside Kevin Knight, a fellow member of the Don Callis Family.

In a recent interview with Forbes, Fletcher described the injury as a major setback that tested him mentally. "It was really hard to wrap my head around, especially because I felt like I was on this trajectory," he said. Despite the challenges, he credits the experience with reigniting his passion for wrestling. "It really did teach me a lot of lessons," he added. Fletcher has been in wrestling for over a decade and said the injury reignited his fire to work harder and improve.

Since his comeback, Fletcher has steadily regained confidence. Winning the AEW International Championship from Konosuke Takeshita was an early milestone, but he noted that he was still finding his footing at that point. Matches against Bandido at Redemption and Mike Bailey in Mexico helped him feel like himself again in the ring. All In was another significant moment for Fletcher, a match he had been aiming to return for since his injury.

Reflecting on his growth over the past year since his AEW World Championship match against Adam Page at All Out 2025, Fletcher said he has added a new level of confidence. "I have this confidence now when I’m in that ring that I think is really going to take me to that next level," he said. While he acknowledges there is still work to do and improvement to be made, Fletcher is focused on becoming the best version of himself.

Fletcher credits learning from every opponent and backstage interaction, shaping his development as a wrestler. "I learn from everyone I get in the ring with," he said. He described his growth as a puzzle made up of pieces from various experiences and feedback, rather than attributing it to any single influence.

Don Callis, a key figure in AEW and Fletcher’s mentor, recently said he believes Fletcher could become one of the greatest wrestlers in the history of the business. Fletcher said he embraces the pressure that comes with such expectations, quoting a phrase he lives by: "pressure is a privilege." He added, "I’ve said publicly many a time that I plan on being the greatest pro wrestler of all time. As much as that is a character, and that is The Protostar saying that, I truly mean it."

Fletcher’s upcoming tag team championship match will pair him and Kevin Knight against The Young Bucks, a team known for their high-profile matches and tag team success. Given the reputations of all four wrestlers involved, the bout is expected to be a highlight of WrestleDream on October 17.

As Fletcher prepares for this tag title opportunity, he continues to focus on steady improvement and seizing every match as a chance to grow. The outcome of the WrestleDream match will be the latest chapter in his evolving AEW career.
