MMA reporter Ariel Helwani sharply criticizes Sean Strickland amid UFC pay dispute and online feud

Ariel Helwani launched a fierce response to UFC middleweight champion Sean Strickland on Tuesday after Strickland branded him “a leach” and “the most biased weak man on the internet.” The MMA reporter used his show to push back on Strickland’s online attacks, his political remarks, and the ongoing pay dispute that has kept the champion sidelined since UFC 328 in May.

Strickland has been at odds with the UFC over his contract ever since reclaiming the middleweight title from Khamzat Chimaev. Despite signing a six-fight deal before that bout, Strickland has refused to fight again until his compensation demands are met. Helwani argued that the contract is binding and the UFC is well within its rights to hold Strickland to its terms.

Strickland took to X earlier this week to vent his frustration at Helwani, accusing him of bias and calling him a “leach.” He claimed their feud started after he stopped supporting Israel, saying, “I cant [freaking] stand Ariel. I am telling you the moment I stopped supporting israel hes been my number 1 hater… Man went from thanking me for supporting them to my biggest hater lmao.” He added, “You meet Ariel and you understand he is a leach. Dana called it day 1.”

Helwani fired back during his show, a clip of which was shared by Happy Punch. He dismissed Strickland’s Israel comments as predictable, saying he anticipated the champion would “say something about me and Israel” because of what Helwani called Strickland’s “Israel Derangement Syndrome.” Helwani clarified, “I am not the state of Israel. I am not the Israeli government. I am Jewish. I support Israel’s right to exist and defend itself.”

Turning Strickland’s insults back on him, Helwani said, “You know, [Sean] likes to use the word goy slop. He is the actual – and I know this is gonna kill him – the actual very definition of that term, because if you don’t know what the word goy means, it’s a Yiddish term for a non-Jew. He is that, and everything he does is sloppy.”

The reporter also criticized Strickland’s online behavior, accusing him of living in an internet bubble. “He doesn’t live in reality. Everything he does, everything he thinks about is the internet. That’s where he lives,” Helwani said. He said Strickland lacks confidants or friends to talk to and instead interacts with faceless online followers, many of whom are not real.

Helwani labeled Strickland a “flip-flopper” who says “whatever he thinks is the most controversial thing to say.” He referenced Strickland’s past support for the Supreme Court’s decision to strike down student loan forgiveness in 2023 as an example. Helwani also dismissed Strickland’s recent call for Alberta independence, mocking the champion’s knowledge of the issue: “Oh yeah, he knows [freaking] nothing about Alberta’s desire to separate from Canada. But let me just latch onto this thing to get some engagement.”

The “leech” accusation clearly hit a nerve with Helwani, who defended his career efforts. “You know [expletive] nothing about what I’ve built and what I’ve done. You drive to the gym every day and get punched in the face, and you think that you are some sort of like holier-than-thou guy because you fight for a living,” he said. He added he respects fighters who “put their lives on the line” but rejected any lecture on sacrifice from Strickland.

Helwani reiterated his view that Strickland’s contract “has essentially put him in career jail.” He said the six-fight deal lured Strickland with “that little shiny toy” before locking him in. “You’re freaking out because you realized that you can’t go to Zuffa Boxing, you can’t go box. You won’t fight Jake Paul, that’s for damn sure,” Helwani said. He warned the UFC could strip Strickland of his title and hand it to someone else.

Arguing that real change would require collective action, Helwani urged Strickland to rally other fighters to challenge the system. “You’re not gonna do that because you just care about yourself,” he said.

Helwani closed by inviting Strickland to meet face-to-face at Extreme Couture in Las Vegas, without cameras, to settle their differences. “Tell me where I’m wrong. Tell me what I said was inaccurate. I would love to hear it,” he said. This is the latest development in a feud that shows no signs of cooling.
