Mike Evans shines in 49ers’ 5-0 start with key role in win over Seahawks

Mike Evans caught seven passes for 113 yards, scored a touchdown, and added a two-point conversion as the San Francisco 49ers extended their unbeaten start to 5-0 with a 32-0 win over the Seattle Seahawks. The performance came in a game many viewed as a potential NFC Championship preview and has cemented Evans’ impact since joining the 49ers after 12 seasons with Tampa Bay.

Kyle Shanahan praised the wide receiver’s contribution, saying Evans’ ability to win on both big in-breaking routes and straight-line outside shots made him a valuable asset. On the 49ers’ final touchdown drive alone, Brock Purdy and Evans linked up four times for 75 yards, including the two-point conversion.

Evans’ arrival in San Francisco has added a downfield threat that suits Purdy’s willingness to take chances deep. Currently, Evans averages 2.6 receptions per game on throws between 10 and 25 yards downfield, which would be the highest rate among Purdy’s targets, edging out Brandon Aiyuk. Unlike Aiyuk, who provided more over-the-top speed, Evans’ presence stretches defenses in a different way, allowing the 49ers to attack intermediate and deep-intermediate zones more effectively.

The 49ers’ offense had struggled against Seattle in recent years, scoring only 26 points combined in three games including playoffs. Against the Seahawks this Sunday, they put up 32 points without allowing a score. Evans’ performance was a significant factor in flipping the script.

Evans came to San Francisco seeking a chance to contend for a title while remaining a significant contributor. So far, the fit has delivered. Shanahan called the Evans signing one of his favorite offseason moves despite concerns about injury and age. The receiver’s ability to still perform at a high level after a long career was evident on Sunday.

The 49ers’ perfect start reflects their place among “Super Bowl legit” teams this season. Their win over the defending champions on the road was a statement, and Evans’ role was central to it.

Elsewhere in the NFL, attention is on other teams making notable offseason moves. The Los Angeles Rams made two blockbuster trades for Myles Garrett and Trent McDuffie, while the Chargers hired Mike McDaniel as coordinator. The Patriots acquired A.J. Brown, and the Chiefs signed Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker III to support an injured Patrick Mahomes.

In other Week 5 action, Parker Washington of the Jacksonville Jaguars continued to impress with his contested catch rate, catching four of five contested opportunities this season, building on a strong performance last year.

Meanwhile, the Chicago Bears’ defense has struggled against deep passes, allowing 453 yards and 33 points per game, with opponents completing 70% of their passes for 10.6 yards per attempt, raising concerns about their defensive prospects.

For the 49ers, the combination of Purdy’s passing and Evans’ receiving has created a dangerous offensive weapon that contributes significantly to their undefeated run. The team’s balance of youth and experience looks to be paying off early in the season.
