Norwalk’s ground game dominated Ottumwa on Friday as Victor Esparza rushed 20 times for 136 yards and two touchdowns, pushing the Warriors to a 27-0 win in a must-have playoff matchup. The victory moved Norwalk to 4-3 on the season and put them in a strong position to clinch one of the final Class 5A playoff spots with two regular-season games remaining.
Esparza’s effort was the driving force behind a grinding running attack that wore down the Bulldogs in the second half. Norwalk’s defense also played a significant part, holding Ottumwa scoreless for the second consecutive game and preventing any offensive breakthroughs. Defensive standout Gavin Ross made 7.5 tackles, including six solo stops and a tackle for loss, while Ben Madole added two sacks on 5.5 tackles. Recovering fumbles late in the game, Zachary Martin and Blake Kathol ensured the Bulldogs never found the end zone.
Ottumwa’s offense, led by quarterback Spencer Dalbey, produced 256 total yards but was unable to convert that into points. Dalbey completed 14 of 26 passes for 168 yards and rushed nine times for 88 yards. Wide receiver Corbin Wilson caught eight passes for 94 yards, but the Bulldogs’ efforts fell short against Norwalk’s defense. On the defensive side, Tanner Hougland recorded a career-high 11.5 total tackles, including nine solo, and contributed to 9.5 tackles for loss. Tate Frueh added 9.5 tackles, including 1.5 for loss and Ottumwa’s lone sack.
The game’s momentum shifted decisively after halftime as Norwalk’s running game took control, gradually pulling away from the Bulldogs. Esparza’s two touchdowns were critical in breaking the deadlock and extending the lead. The Warriors’ ability to maintain possession and control the tempo limited Ottumwa’s opportunities, shutting down their attempts to mount a comeback.
Ottumwa, now 2-5, faces the challenge of ending a four-game losing streak when they host Des Moines Roosevelt on Homecoming Night this Friday at Schafer Stadium. The Bulldogs will need to improve their offensive production to keep their playoff hopes alive against another team sitting at 4-3.
