College Football Playoff and ESPN continue talks on expanding playoff to 24 teams after $7.8B deal

The College Football Playoff and ESPN remain in talks about expanding the playoff field to 24 teams, following the close of a 30-day exclusive negotiating window. The discussions come after ESPN signed a $7.8 billion, six-year media rights deal that gives the network first option on adding two new games if the playoff expands beyond its current 12-team format.

The College Football Playoff issued a statement on Saturday confirming the ongoing nature of negotiations with ESPN, saying the dialogue “has been constructive” and will continue as both sides seek a path forward. The statement also noted the confidential status of the talks, with no further details released at this time.

Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti expressed optimism on Thursday that the playoff would grow to 24 teams during ESPN’s exclusive window, but he acknowledged that the deadline for an agreement would likely be extended. The core challenge remains generating enough revenue to replace the income lost if conference championship games are eliminated to make room for more playoff contests.

The playoff expanded from four to 12 teams beginning with the 2024 season, but after executives failed to finalize an expansion deal, the CFP reverted to the 12-team format for the current campaign. Any changes for next season must be finalized by December 1.

ESPN’s new $7.8 billion deal, which started this year, grants the network the first right to add the first two playoff games if the field grows. The network’s ability to assemble a financially viable package, either alone or with other media partners, will be crucial to covering revenue gaps created by additional playoff games and fewer conference championships.

The CFP’s statement did not provide a timeline for a decision, leaving fans and stakeholders waiting for further updates. Meanwhile, the December 1 deadline looms as the last chance to implement any playoff format changes for the 2025 season.
