Buckeye Trail’s Sam Wayble aims for steady play at OHSAA Division III state golf in Sunbury

When the OHSAA Division III State Golf Tournament begins at NorthStar Golf Club in Sunbury on October 12 and 13, Buckeye Trail senior Sam Wayble plans to keep his approach simple. Despite stepping onto an unfamiliar course with the pressure of a state championship, Wayble aims to focus on fundamentals rather than the external factors that come with such a stage.

"I've never played there before," Wayble said. "My hope is to stay consistent off the tee, attack when I can on par 5s, and control what I can control."

NorthStar demands accuracy off the tee and a measured approach, rewarding players who manage risk intelligently. Wayble’s strategy involves steady play instead of chasing a specific target score. "I don't really have a target score in mind, I just want to be competitive," he said. "I want to make the best of the opportunity in front of me. It's really just me against the course."

Wayble earned his spot in the state field with a composed final hole at the district tournament held at River Green Golf Course. Needing a birdie on the 18th to finish even-par 72, he sank the putt to clinch the East District medalist title. That birdie sealed a back-nine 34 after a front-nine 38, completing a turnaround that propelled him ahead of a strong field.

"I really didn't know where I stood on the leaderboard," Wayble recalled. "But I knew if I made the birdie putt, that was a 72 and that score would give me a good chance to win it."

Wayble’s back-nine surge came from patience and rhythm rather than forcing shots. "Putts just started falling, I didn't force anything, and I was able to find the fairways," he said. "That gave me a look into every green."

That calm approach paid off with a 2-under 34 on the back nine, a crucial factor in his district medalist victory. The achievement capped four years of steady work and development in competitive golf.

"It's something I've been working towards over my last four years of competitive golf," Wayble said. "It finally paid off, and the medalist honor just came with having a good round."

Finishing the district round with a birdie putt also marked a bittersweet moment for Wayble. His high school golf career is drawing to a close, but he still has the state tournament ahead.

"I wish could share that moment with all the coaches and teammates that I've had over the last four years," he said. "Seeing my high school career coming to a close with friends that I've played with for four years is bittersweet, but I feel pretty lucky to still have a couple more scorecards to sign."

Wayble will tee off at NorthStar Golf Club next week, carrying a quiet confidence rooted in control and consistency rather than scoreboard pressure.
