Green Bay Packers activate wide receiver Savion Williams as five players clear injured reserve window

Savion Williams has been designated to return to practice after the Green Bay Packers opened his 21-day window following a four-game stint on injured reserve. The wide receiver’s return comes as the Packers face a depleted receiving corps after Jayden Reed’s season-ending neck injury.

Green Bay announced the move ahead of their game against the Chicago Bears, confirming that Williams will take the field for practice starting Wednesday. This decision follows the completion of the mandatory four-game absence for five players on injured reserve or the physically unable to perform list, including linebacker Micah Parsons, tight end Luke Musgrave, defensive linemen Jordon Riley and Collin Oliver.

Under NFL rules, all five are eligible to return to the active roster, but head coach Matt LaFleur has so far only opened the window for Williams. Parsons remains sidelined as he recovers from an ACL injury. The Packers are weighing the health and readiness of each player before deciding on activation.

Williams, a third-round draft pick, has been viewed as a potential solution to the Packers’ thinning receiver depth. With Reed out for the season following surgery, and Christian Watson alongside Matthew Golden as the primary targets, Williams’ return offers an additional option for the offense. Skyy Moore and Bo Melton have taken on expanded roles, but Williams provides another player acquired through the team’s draft strategy.

The 21-day practice window allows Green Bay to evaluate Williams’ condition and determine how soon he can contribute in game situations. While designation to return does not guarantee a spot on the active roster, the Packers appear keen to reintegrate him quickly to help balance the offense and distribute snaps more evenly.

The other four players who have cleared their injured reserve windows remain under consideration for return at a later time. Musgrave, Riley and Oliver could reinforce Green Bay’s roster across offensive and defensive units once they are deemed ready. However, the club has not yet indicated if or when these players will begin practicing or be activated.

The timing of Williams’ return is notable given the Packers’ recent injury setbacks and the need to maintain offensive options. LaFleur’s confirmation of Williams’ designation was included in a report highlighting that every player placed on injured reserve before the regular season or starting the year on the physically unable to perform list has now missed at least four games, making them eligible to rejoin the roster.

Williams was featured in a Clubhouse Live event at Fox Cities Stadium in Grand Chute on December 22, shortly before his return window opened. His recovery and readiness will be closely monitored as the Packers prepare for their upcoming game.

For now, Williams’ return is the only confirmed activation from the group of five eligible players, leaving Green Bay’s depth chart in flux as they assess the next steps for Parsons, Musgrave, Riley and Oliver.
