Hull City have announced the arrival of defender Matt Targett on an initial two-year deal.
The 30-year-old is free to join the club after leaving Newcastle United at the end of his contract, and he has now committed to the Tigers until 2028 with the option of a further season. Targett joins Hull City having spent last season on loan at Middlesbrough, where he played 46 times for the club.
His last game came in the 1-0 Championship play-off final defeat to Hull at Wembley.
Targett is a former Southampton and Aston Villa player, and he's spoken about his new move. "I’m delighted to be here," he said. The former England international revealed that his agent rang him on Saturday night to say Hull City were interested, and he was soon on the phone with the club's owner.
Targett has been impressed by the passion of the owner, and he's also spoken to players who have been at the club previously. "They spoke very highly of the club," he said, making it a "no-brainer" for him to join.
During his time with Newcastle, Targett played 47 times in total – just one game more than his loan spell last season. His move to Hull City comes as a boost to the club, which will be hoping to build on its recent performances.
