Bills suffer tough loss to Patriots with Josh Allen’s struggles and defensive breakdowns

The Buffalo Bills fell to the New England Patriots on Sunday in a game marked by Josh Allen’s uncharacteristic struggles and a series of defensive breakdowns. The Bills’ usually reliable quarterback appeared uncomfortable and sloppy with the football, while the defense repeatedly gave Patriots quarterback Drake Maye time and space to find open receivers.

Josh Allen, in his ninth year, failed to live up to his usual standards. The Bills had several chances to put the Patriots away but couldn’t capitalize. Allen’s decision-making was off, and he struggled to protect the ball, a sharp contrast to his typical performances. The defensive secondary and inside linebackers also faltered, allowing New England to extend drives and make key plays.

Among the few positives for Buffalo was Keon Coleman, who caught six passes for 116 yards. Coleman’s impact went beyond the stats, particularly in the fourth quarter. On a critical third down, he caught a difficult deflected pass to keep a drive alive. He then caught two more passes for 58 yards, including a go-ahead touchdown with less than five minutes left. Coleman’s performance stood out on a day when Buffalo’s receiving corps needed a boost.

James Cook also showed promise, averaging more than six yards per carry for the second straight game. Yet Buffalo handed him the ball only 12 times, a puzzling decision given his effectiveness. Cook looked dangerous when given the opportunity but was underused during a game where the Bills needed offensive consistency.

On the defensive line, Greg Rousseau and Bradley Chubb pressured Maye throughout the game. Rousseau, who had recorded two sacks in every game until now, didn’t get a sack but managed eight quarterback pressures and four hits. He also nearly forced a strip-sack on a play that was overturned, with some feeling it should have been called intentional grounding. Chubb contributed with strong run defense and a crucial third-down pressure late in the first half that helped the Bills regain possession.

Despite the pressure from Rousseau and Chubb, the Bills’ secondary repeatedly allowed Maye to find open receivers once he evaded the pass rush. This failure to contain the passing game was a significant factor in the Patriots’ ability to stay competitive.

The Bills now sit at 3-1 after this loss. While the defeat was a setback, it does not erase their achievements in the first three weeks of the season. However, the performance raised concerns about the offense’s ability to execute and the defense’s consistency. After a poor showing against the Los Angeles Chargers last week, Buffalo will need to address these issues quickly.

No game ball was awarded after the loss. Several players were acknowledged for their efforts, but the overall performance left much to be desired. The Bills will look to regroup as they prepare for their next game.
