Matthew Stafford joins elite NFL quarterbacks with 40th fourth-quarter comeback in Rams win

Matthew Stafford engineered the 40th fourth-quarter comeback of his NFL career on Sunday, leading the Los Angeles Rams past the Philadelphia Eagles 24-20 in Week 4. This achievement places Stafford alongside Tom Brady (46), Peyton Manning (43), and Ben Roethlisberger (41) as the only quarterbacks in NFL history to reach 40 career fourth-quarter comebacks, according to the Rams public relations team.

The Rams trailed 20-10 at halftime and entered the final quarter still down by 10 points. Stafford led a 10-play, 98-yard drive that consumed 3 minutes and 27 seconds, ending with a one-yard touchdown run by Kyren Williams with 3:59 remaining. That cut the Eagles' lead to 20-17. After regaining possession with 2:55 left on the clock, Stafford orchestrated another late drive, covering 79 yards in 10 plays over 1 minute and 45 seconds. Williams capped the drive with a 7-yard touchdown run at 1:10 to give Los Angeles the lead for good.

This game also marked Stafford’s 51st career game-winning drive. Only Brady (58), Manning (54), Roethlisberger (53), and Drew Brees (53) have more, putting Stafford in elite company as he continues to add to his late-game heroics.

The Rams’ comeback highlighted Stafford’s ability to perform under pressure, rallying his team after trailing for much of the game. The Eagles held a 20-10 advantage at the half and maintained that margin into the fourth quarter before the Rams surged back.

Williams played a critical role with two touchdown runs in the final minutes, both set up by Stafford’s leadership on the field. His first score trimmed the deficit, while the second put the Rams ahead, securing the win.

With several games still left in the NFL season, Stafford has the opportunity to extend his records for fourth-quarter comebacks and game-winning drives. The Rams would likely prefer to build a cushion early in games to avoid relying on late rallies.

Sunday’s victory was a significant moment for Stafford, placing his name alongside some of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history for comeback performances. The Rams now look to build on this momentum as the season progresses.
