The Carolina Hurricanes secured their first win of the season with a 3-2 overtime victory against the Philadelphia Flyers at Xfinity Mobile Arena on Saturday night. Shayne Gostisbehere, a former Flyer, scored the game-winning goal on a power play 2:51 into the extra period, completing a hard-fought comeback.
Carolina struck immediately, with Sebastian Aho scoring just 10 seconds into the game, assisted by William Carrier and Andrei Svechnikov. That early goal gave the Hurricanes the lead and their opening period tally for the season. The Flyers responded at 8:03 in the first period when Owen Tippett tied the score. Matvei Michkov put Philadelphia ahead 2-1 in the second after a defensive lapse by Carolina.
The third period saw the Hurricanes claw back. Aho again found the net, this time on a power play at 4:59, firing a shot from the bumper to level the score at 2-2. The game remained tied through regulation, forcing overtime.
The Flyers’ goaltender Joseph Woll kept Philadelphia in the contest, making 37 saves on 40 shots. Despite conceding a goal in the opening 10 seconds, Woll’s performance was described by 97.3 ESPN as outstanding, though he ultimately could not stop the overtime power-play goal. The Flyers were heavily outshot 40-18 and went 0-for-4 on the power play. Head coach Rick Tocchet admitted the team’s execution was lacking, saying after the loss, “Our execution is not good this year.” He added that despite multiple practices, mistakes persisted and the team “had the look we wanted and we just missed” during their overtime chances.
Carolina faced a tough moment before overtime began when they were shorthanded, but Jordan Staal, Jaccob Slavin, and Jalen Chatfield killed the penalty, allowing Gostisbehere to return to the ice and score the winner.
The Flyers dropped to two straight overtime losses and are off to their slowest start since the 2015-16 season, with no power-play goals scored so far. The Hurricanes, meanwhile, improved their record and showed resilience against a difficult opponent. As reported by the Trentonian, the team now faces a demanding five-game stretch including matchups against the Tampa Bay Lightning and Boston Bruins. This overtime victory demonstrated Carolina’s ability to grind through adversity, even when the game does not start in their favor.
