NFL investigates official’s use of profanity toward Cardinals tight end Trey McBride during game

The NFL is investigating an incident in which an official appeared to use profanity toward Arizona Cardinals tight end Trey McBride during Sunday’s game against the New York Giants. The controversy unfolded after McBride expressed frustration over a non-called pass interference on a third-down incompletion. Cameras captured the referee’s response, which included an expletive, and the footage quickly spread across social media.

The league confirmed it is reviewing the situation, where the official’s conduct toward McBride has come under scrutiny. NFL Players Association president JC Tretter weighed in on X, calling the behaviour unacceptable and urging the NFL to hold officials to the same standards as players. “Players are consistently held accountable when the roles are reversed. We expect the NFL to hold officials to the same standard,” Tretter wrote.

Sideline reporter Aditi Kinkhabwala, who was close to the incident, shared her observations on X as well. She noted that McBride began the exchange by politely pleading for a pass interference flag, saying “please.” “He was heated for sure, but I never heard a curse from him. The harshest he got was, ‘You’re ruining the game,’” Kinkhabwala said.

The episode has drawn attention amid broader discussions about officials’ interactions with players and coaches. Earlier in the same week, Patriots coach Mike Vrabel was penalised during New England’s win over the Buffalo Bills for saying something similar to an official. The penalty led to a Buffalo touchdown. Vrabel later commented, “I’ve said that 87 times since I’ve been a head coach. There’s nothing derogatory. You know, you’d have to ask him. I think he was a little sensitive. … I probably shouldn’t have sworn, but I can tell you that in my history of being on the sidelines as a head coach, I’ve said that, and I apologized to him.”

The incident with McBride raises questions about how the NFL enforces conduct standards for its officials. The league has not yet announced any disciplinary action but is actively reviewing the footage and statements from those involved. Meanwhile, the Cardinals tight end has not publicly commented on the exchange.

The NFL’s handling of this case will likely attract attention given the visible nature of the incident and calls from the players’ union for accountability. The investigation remains ongoing.
