Tyquan Thornton suffers severe ankle injury after 55-yard catch in Chiefs’ win over Raiders

Tyquan Thornton’s impressive 55-yard catch late in the fourth quarter of the Kansas City Chiefs’ 30-27 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders ended with a severe left ankle injury that left the wide receiver unable to continue. After hauling in the long pass, Thornton initially celebrated before realizing the extent of his injury and struggling to stand on the ankle. Cameras showed the severity of the injury but quickly cut away from the replays. Thornton was helped off the field with an air cast.

Thornton had been having a standout game before the injury. He finished with five receptions for 111 yards and two touchdowns, adding to his season total of six catches for 108 yards entering the match. The 50th overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, Thornton spent his first three seasons with the New England Patriots before joining the Chiefs in 2025. Last year, he set career highs with 438 yards and three touchdowns while averaging 23.1 yards per catch.

The Chiefs did not let Thornton’s injury stall their momentum. Kenneth Walker III scored immediately after Thornton’s long reception and added another touchdown less than 20 seconds later, capitalizing on a Raiders fumble on the ensuing kickoff. Those scores helped Kansas City maintain their undefeated record at 4-0 while handing the Raiders their first loss of the season.

Thornton’s injury will be monitored closely by the Chiefs medical staff. No official update on his condition has been provided since the game ended.
