The NFL is investigating an incident involving line judge Jeff Seeman, who was caught on camera using profanity toward Arizona Cardinals tight end Trey McBride during Sunday’s game against the New York Giants. The league confirmed the probe through spokesperson Brian McCarthy in an email to The Associated Press.
Footage showed Seeman swearing at McBride late in the fourth quarter, shortly after a controversial non-call on a third-and-2 play. New York’s Dru Phillips made contact with McBride before the ball arrived from Cardinals quarterback Jacoby Brissett, but officials did not penalize the Giants for pass interference or illegal contact. Arizona punted on the ensuing play, and the Giants secured a 36-24 victory after Deonte Banks intercepted Brissett and returned the pick for a touchdown as time expired.
The incident drew immediate attention from the NFL Players Association. JC Tretter, the union’s executive director and a former offensive lineman with eight NFL seasons, condemned the official’s conduct on social media. “This kind of behavior from an official towards a player is unacceptable,” Tretter wrote alongside the video clip. “Players are consistently held accountable when the roles are reversed. We expect the NFL to hold officials to the same standard.”
The NFL Referees Association had not responded to requests for comment on the matter at the time of reporting.
The tense exchange occurred with under five minutes remaining and added another layer of controversy to a game already marked by key calls and turnovers. The Cardinals were seeking a crucial stop on third down to maintain possession, but the missed penalty call allowed the Giants to shift momentum before Banks’ pick-six sealed the outcome.
Jeff Seeman’s use of profanity toward McBride is one of the rare instances of an official’s conduct coming under public scrutiny during a game. The NFL’s decision to investigate signals the league’s awareness of concerns raised by players and the union about maintaining professional standards on the field.
As of now, the league has not announced any disciplinary action or the findings of its review. The incident remains under review while the NFL continues to oversee the conduct of officials in a season where officiating decisions have drawn increased attention from players, coaches, and fans alike.
