Prairie View A&M’s 17-point second-half lead evaporated as Mississippi Valley State mounted a comeback to win 28-27 on Saturday at Rice-Totten Stadium. The Delta Devils outscored the Panthers 21-3 after halftime, snapping a three-game losing streak in the rivalry.
Josh Brown’s 35-yard touchdown pass to Caleb Brownlow, followed by a Luka Sari extra point with just over two minutes remaining, gave Mississippi Valley State its first lead of the game. Prairie View’s attempt to respond stalled on a fourth-and-2 play when Tevin Carter’s quarterback run was stopped, allowing MVSU to run down the clock. On the final play, Carter was sacked by Javieane Stevens as the Panthers failed to get a pass off from near midfield.
Prairie View had looked firmly in control earlier, jumping to a 24-0 lead in the second quarter and going into halftime ahead 24-7. Carter contributed two rushing touchdowns and threw a scoring pass to Rodny Ojo, putting the Panthers in a seemingly commanding position.
Mississippi Valley State improved to 2-4 overall and 1-1 in Southwestern Athletic Conference play, while Prairie View dropped to 2-4 and 2-1 in the SWAC. The loss ended Prairie View’s hopes of an undefeated conference season.
The Panthers’ collapse after holding a large lead raised questions about their ability to close out games, while the Delta Devils demonstrated resilience in turning the contest around.
With the clock winding down, MVSU’s defensive stand on fourth down was the decisive moment, preserving the narrow victory and handing Prairie View its first conference loss of the season.
