The Chicago Cubs put on a show at Wrigley Field, routing the Detroit Tigers 11-2 on Tuesday night.
The Tigers had hoped to follow up Monday night's thrilling win with another, but it was not to be. Framber Valdez got the start, but he lasted just two-thirds of an inning, giving up five hits and six runs.
Pete Crow-Armstrong got the Cubs' first inning off to a flying start, smacking a triple to the right-field corner. Seiya Suzuki walked and Alex Bregman was hit by a fastball to load the bases, setting up a big inning.
Carson Kelly poked a two-run single through the right side, and Michael Busch did the same to score Bregman for a 3-0 lead. A short fly ball to right field was blown by the wind, falling for another single as the Cubs went up 4-0.
Valdez's final line was 2/3 IP, 5 H, 6 R, 2 BB, 1 HBP, 1 K. Yikes. The wind was blowing in and knocking fly balls down, especially to left field, with extreme prejudice.
The Cubs added-on in the second with a walk, stolen base, and single for a 7-0 score. By the fifth, the Tigers were already down 9-0, after a single and a home run.
The Tigers finally got on the board in the ninth, when Hao-Yu Lee singled to lead off the inning, and Dillon Dingler sliced a home run through the wind to narrow the gap to 11-2. But it was too little, too late.
The finale and rubber match is Wednesday night at 8:10 pm EDT. The Cubs will be looking to take the series 2-0, while the Tigers will be hoping to salvage a win.
