Memphis Grizzlies waive former No. 14 pick Jordan Hawkins, opening free agency chance

The Memphis Grizzlies have waived Jordan Hawkins, the former No. 14 pick in the 2023 NBA draft, ending his brief stint with the team and opening the door for him to join a new franchise. The move was confirmed by ESPN’s NBA insider Shams Charania, who reported that Hawkins and Memphis mutually agreed to part ways through the waiver process. Once Hawkins clears waivers, he will become a free agent and able to negotiate with other teams.

The decision came just three weeks after Memphis acquired Hawkins from the New Orleans Pelicans in a multi-player trade. The Grizzlies received Hawkins, Micah Peavy, and two second-round draft picks in exchange for AJ Johnson and veteran forward Taj Gibson. Memphis entered training camp with 18 players on standard contracts but needed to reduce the roster to the league maximum of 15. Hawkins, who was not assured a regular rotation spot, became an obvious candidate to be waived amid the roster crunch.

Despite the waiver, the Grizzlies will still owe Hawkins his $7.02 million salary for the 2023-24 season if he clears waivers, according to the terms reported. This financial commitment reflects the contract Hawkins signed as a lottery pick but does not guarantee him playing time with Memphis.

Hawkins, 24, came into the NBA after a strong collegiate career at the University of Connecticut, where he helped the Huskies win a national championship. Known primarily as a perimeter shooter, Hawkins has struggled to carve out a consistent role at the professional level. Last season with New Orleans, he averaged 13.6 minutes and 5.1 points per game, numbers that suggest limited impact so far.

A new team could provide Hawkins with more clarity and opportunities to develop his game. His shooting ability may attract franchises looking to add floor spacing on the perimeter. Memphis, meanwhile, is undergoing a roster rebuild focused on younger players like Cameron Boozer, Zach Edey, and Cedric Coward. This shift in focus contributed to Hawkins’ uncertain future despite his recent arrival.

The waiver move allows Hawkins to seek a better fit before the regular season begins. Clearing waivers will give him the chance to sign with a team willing to offer a clearer role or more minutes. For Hawkins, this unexpected exit from Memphis could become a fresh start in the NBA.
