U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson prayed before kickoff and watched as Calvary Baptist High School’s top-ranked football team dominated Loyola Prep in a Louisiana showdown Friday night.
Johnson, a native of Shreveport and part-time Benton resident, was on hand at the game at Calvary Baptist, where his presence surprised many fans. He delivered the opening prayer on a clear evening perfect for high school football. Johnson spent the first half near the press box but also mingled with spectators in the stands.
“This is the game of the week. You’ve got Calvary and Loyola here and it’s been an offensive shootout,” Johnson told the USA TODAY Network. “The crowd’s into it. The weather’s beautiful and everybody’s having a good time. It’s a blessing to be here.”
The game featured the Cavaliers, ranked number one in the Louisiana Sports Writers Association Class 2A poll, extending their unbeaten run to 5-0 with a 52-24 victory over Loyola Prep. Calvary’s running back Z’ryan Mills was the standout, rushing for 194 yards and scoring four touchdowns on the night. Quarterback Hudson Price connected on 13 of 18 passes for 151 yards and three touchdowns, while Brylon Huglon added two scores.
Loyola’s Bryce Restovich completed 19 of 31 passes for 261 yards and two touchdowns, but it was not enough to counter Calvary’s offensive firepower.
Johnson’s connection to the event was personal. His wife Kelly was celebrating her birthday, his brother-in-law works on staff at Calvary Baptist Church, and his mother and brother attend nearby Ellerbe Baptist. His appearance drew attention beyond the usual local crowd.
Jimmy Watson of the USA TODAY Network, who covers Louisiana sports, reported on the event and noted Johnson’s engagement with fans throughout the first half. The game unfolded as an offensive spectacle, with both teams trading scores before Calvary pulled away decisively.
The House Speaker’s visit to the game underscored his ties to the Shreveport-Bossier City community and his support for local events, particularly those involving Calvary Baptist. There has been no indication from Johnson or his office about further public appearances at sporting events.
Calvary’s victory kept them on track for a strong season, maintaining their top spot in the local rankings. Johnson remained at the game through halftime, taking in the action as the Cavaliers continued to build their lead.
