Dean Wade clarifies comments on role with 76ers amid Cleveland Cavaliers departure

Dean Wade addressed recent claims that his comments about joining the Philadelphia 76ers were a slight against his former team, the Cleveland Cavaliers. Speaking on the Brace and Dunne radio show on 97.5 FM in Philadelphia, Wade explained his mindset when signing with the 76ers, emphasising his focus on competing for a championship rather than personal statistics.

“I wanted to compete for a championship,” Wade said. “I’ve never been a stats-driven player personally. I just wanted to play when I was younger, when I was a rookie or a second year, I had to do all the small things; the dirty work. I just kind of embraced it.”

Wade’s remarks sparked some confusion among Cavaliers fans, who interpreted them as a jab at Cleveland. The confusion arose because Wade mentioned other high-profile players joining the 76ers, like Jaylen Brown, Anfernee Simons, and LeBron James, which shifted his role from a likely starter to a bench player. However, Wade’s comments came in response to questions about his role in Philadelphia, not about his departure from Cleveland.

The interviewers asked if Wade felt frustrated losing a starter’s spot in Philly after the arrivals of Brown and James. Wade responded by saying, “When those guys—Jaylen got traded, when Anfernee signed, when LeBron picked here…I knew I was going to play. I’m a piece of this team.” His focus was on his current role rather than on his former team’s situation.

Wade left the Cavaliers early in the offseason after spending several seasons with the club, which had developed him as a player. His departure allowed Cleveland to pursue other roster moves, including trading for young prospect Peyton Watson. The Cavaliers’ salary cap situation at the time made it unclear how much they were willing or able to offer Wade in free agency. There was speculation that if Cleveland had truly wanted him back, they could have matched other offers, but no formal confirmation exists.

Wade’s decision to join Philadelphia was driven by his belief that the 76ers offered the best opportunity for him at that point in his career. This was before the additions of Brown, Simons, and James shifted the team’s dynamic. Wade’s comments stressed that his choice was about competing for a title and fitting into a team where he could contribute, not about casting doubt on Cleveland’s direction or management.

The 76ers made Wade their first significant offseason acquisition before adding several star players, which altered the team's depth chart. Wade’s role adjusted accordingly, but he remains part of Philadelphia’s plans. His remarks to 97.5 FM The Fanatic aimed to clarify his mindset and reaffirm his commitment to his new team rather than stir controversy about his former club.

The Cavaliers have not publicly commented on Wade’s interview or his status with the team since his exit. Meanwhile, Wade continues to prepare for the upcoming NBA season with the 76ers, focusing on competing within a roster that now includes multiple All-Stars.
