Roma’s goal tally more than doubles with 14 scored in first five games under Gasperini

Roma have more than doubled their goal tally from last season, scoring 14 times in their first five Serie A matches under new coach Gian Piero Gasperini. The Giallorossi have won four games and drawn one, collecting 13 points and registering nine more goals than in the same period last year.

After a slow start last season, Roma’s attack has come alive with Gasperini’s influence. The team scored just five goals in their opening five league fixtures in 2023 but have already found the net 14 times in 2024. Their only Serie A peers with a better goal return so far are Inter Milan. The improvement is notable given that Roma’s opponents this season have included tougher sides such as Fiorentina, Lecce, Atalanta, Torino, and Inter, compared to last year’s fixtures against Bologna, Pisa, Torino, Lazio, and Verona.

Dutch striker Malen has been a major contributor to this scoring surge, netting six goals in the early stages of the campaign. His performances have drawn attention, but the team’s overall offensive output has increased as well. Roma have taken 99 shots on goal during these five games, up from 63 at this point last season, an increase of more than 50 percent. Their first shot in the upcoming match against Como will be their 100th of the season, according to Corriere della Sera.

Gasperini’s approach has clearly encouraged a more aggressive and productive attacking style. The team’s ability to create chances and convert them has improved, making them one of the most dangerous sides in Serie A so far. Roma’s defensive record and points tally are roughly on par with last season, but it is in front of goal where the team has taken a significant leap forward.

Roma face Como next Sunday, where they will look to continue their strong start. The team’s increased shot volume and goal-scoring frequency will be under close scrutiny as Gasperini aims to maintain this attacking momentum.
