Ben Simmons addresses viral airball during Kings’ first training camp in 18 months

Ben Simmons faced questions about a viral clip showing him airballing a three-pointer during Sacramento Kings training camp, his first in nearly 18 months. The veteran guard acknowledged the moment but urged perspective.

“I airballed one, and one of y’all posted it, and that was the one that goes viral,” Simmons said Thursday. “But stuff happens, you know. It’s basketball. I get my shots up, I get my footwork in. It’s what it is.”

The footage spread quickly across social media, showing Simmons catching a pass beyond the arc and attempting a wide-open three that missed badly. The shot drew attention partly because Simmons has faced years of scrutiny over his jump shooting.

Simmons sat out the entire 2025-26 season managing back injuries and nerve damage, so some rust was expected. The Kings signed him in September to a one-year, $3.5 million deal, a veteran minimum contract carrying minimal risk. Sacramento needed an experienced point guard behind rookie Darius Acuff Jr., the No. 7 overall pick in this year’s draft.

Simmons’ value lies more in his passing and defense than shooting. Over 383 career games, he averages 13.1 points, 7.4 rebounds, 7.2 assists, and 1.5 steals, with three All-Star selections. His reputation as a top defender remains a key asset for the Kings.

Sacramento’s general manager Scott Perry pursued Simmons after a workout in Florida. Other veterans such as Cameron Payne and Victor Oladipo were also considered. The signing follows a pattern; the Kings gave Russell Westbrook a late-season minimum deal last year, and he outperformed expectations before retiring this summer.

Since arriving, Simmons has remained upbeat about his role and recovery. His remarks suggest he isn’t letting a single practice misfire define his return.

The Kings open their regular season in the coming weeks, with Simmons expected to contribute primarily as a facilitator and defender while regaining his shooting form.
