Texas A&M’s offense has struggled to find rhythm in the Southeastern Conference, dropping their first two SEC games and sitting at 2-2 overall after a 35-6 loss to LSU. Quarterback Marcel Reed, who set career highs last season with 3,169 passing yards and 25 touchdowns, has struggled noticeably this year, throwing for just 106 yards and no touchdowns against the Tigers. Despite Reed’s regression, offensive lineman Wilkin Formby publicly backed the quarterback during Tuesday’s press conference.
Formby, an Alabama transfer now anchoring Texas A&M’s offensive line, spoke firmly about his confidence in Reed’s abilities. “I have a lot of belief in Marcel. He's one of the hardest workers on the team, and I know he has a lot of pressure just as every SEC or high level quarterback has,” Formby said. “I got the utmost respect and belief for Marcel, and I know that he can do what he needs to do. We just got to give him the time to go play at a high level and just keep helping to breed his confidence every day in practice and in the next games to come.”
Reed’s struggles have been well documented, particularly his inability to complete high-percentage throws and generate explosive plays. Texas A&M ranks last in the SEC in plays of 20 or more yards, a surprising stat given the talent at receiver. Junior wide receiver Mario Craver has emerged as a top college football threat, and redshirt sophomore Ashton Bethel-Roman is coming off a breakout season. Yet open receivers have not translated into consistent production from Reed under first-year offensive coordinator Holmon Wiggins.
Coach Mike Elko also defended Reed after Monday’s loss to LSU, emphasizing the quarterback’s work ethic and potential to improve. The pressure on Reed mounts with each game, especially as Texas A&M prepares to face Arkansas this Saturday. The Aggies need a turnaround to stop the slide in conference play.
Formby’s support highlights the offensive line’s belief that Reed remains the best option at quarterback despite the rough start. The line’s ability to protect him and give him time in the pocket will be critical in helping Reed regain his form. As the season progresses, the spotlight will remain on Reed to execute better and lead Texas A&M out of its early SEC slump.
